Sri Lanka’s medieval capital, Polonnaruwa, is home to remarkably well-preserved stone temples, royal palaces and irrigation reservoirs that once sustained an entire kingdom. Its centrepiece, the Gal Vihara, showcases four colossal Buddha statues carved directly into rock.
